Toynbee's first major work, A Study of History, was published in 12 volumes between 1934 and 1961. In this work, Toynbee argued that civilizations are not static entities but rather are constantly evolving and changing. He identified 21 civilizations that have existed throughout history, and he analyzed the factors that led to their rise and fall. Toynbee believed that civilizations decline when they become too rigid and inflexible and when they lose their creativity and vitality.

Toynbee's work has been praised for its originality and its insights into the nature of history. However, it has also been criticized for being too deterministic and for ignoring the role of individual agency in history. Despite these criticisms, Toynbee's work remains an important contribution to the study of history and the human condition.
