Rebecca West and Dorothy Thompson were two of the most influential women of the 20th century. As journalists, critics, and social activists, they used their voices to speak out against injustice, inequality, and oppression. Their work helped to shape public opinion and advance the cause of social justice.

Rebecca West

Rebecca West was born in London, England, in 1892. She began her career as a journalist in 1912, and quickly became known for her sharp wit and incisive writing. During World War I, she served as a correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, and her dispatches from the front lines were widely read and admired.

After the war, West continued to write journalism, but she also began to publish novels and short stories. Her most famous novel, "The Return of the Soldier," was published in 1918 and is considered a classic of WWI literature.

West was a passionate advocate for women's rights, and she used her writing to challenge traditional gender roles. She was also a vocal critic of fascism and communism, and she spoke out against the rise of these ideologies in Europe.

Dorothy Thompson

Dorothy Thompson was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1893. She began her career as a journalist in 1920, and quickly became one of the most respected foreign correspondents of her time. In 1938, she won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary for her coverage of the rise of Nazism in Germany.

Thompson was a fearless and outspoken critic of fascism and communism. She used her column in the New York Herald Tribune to denounce the horrors of the Holocaust, and she called for the United States to intervene to stop the genocide.

Thompson was also a strong advocate for women's rights and labor rights. She was a founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union, and she served on the board of directors of the National Consumers League.
