In the early days of education, girls were largely excluded from the classroom. This was due to a number of factors, including the belief that women were not capable of intellectual pursuits, that they should be focused on domestic duties, and that their education would be a waste of resources.
Despite these challenges, there were always a few women who defied the odds and sought out an education. One of the most famous examples is Hypatia, a Greek philosopher who lived in the 4th century AD. Hypatia was a brilliant mathematician and astronomer, and she taught at the University of Alexandria. She was tragically murdered by a mob of Christian fanatics, but her legacy continues to inspire women today.
The Renaissance saw a slow but steady increase in the number of women who were educated. This was due in part to the rise of humanism, which emphasized the importance of education for all people. It was also due to the influence of Protestant reformers, who believed that women should be able to read the Bible for themselves.
The 18th century saw a number of important advances in women's education. In 1765, the first school for girls was founded in the United States. In 1789, the French Revolution declared that all children, regardless of gender, had the right to an education.
The 19th century saw even more progress in women's education
