Jamaica has a long and troubled history with gangs. From the early days of the Rastafarian movement to the present day, gangs have played a major role in Jamaican society. In the 1970s and 1980s, Jamaica was torn apart by a series of gang wars known as the Babylonian Wars. These wars were fought between rival gangs for control of the lucrative drug trade. The violence was so severe that the Jamaican government was forced to declare a state of emergency.
In Gangs of Jamaica: The Babylonian Wars, author Patrick Robinson provides a comprehensive account of these wars. Robinson draws on interviews with gang members, police officers, and government officials to tell the story of how the wars began, how they were fought, and how they ended. He also explores the social and economic conditions that led to the rise of gangs in Jamaica.
Gangs of Jamaica is a gripping and informative read. Robinson's writing is clear and concise, and he does an excellent job of explaining the complex history of gangs in Jamaica. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of organized crime in the Caribbean.
The Shower Posse
One of the most notorious gangs in Jamaica was the Shower Posse. The Shower Posse was founded in the early 1980s by Lester Coke, also known as Jim Brown. Coke was a ruthless drug lord who controlled a vast network of cocaine traffickers. The Shower Posse was responsible for a wave of violence in Jamaica, including the murders of several police officers.
In 1991, Coke was arrested and extradited to the United States. He was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to life in prison. The Shower Posse was weakened by Coke's arrest, but it continued to operate for several more years.
The One Free Download Gang
Another major gang in Jamaica was the One Free Download Gang. The One Free Download Gang was founded in the early 1990s by Andrew "Bunnie" Hope. Hope was a former member of the Shower Posse who had broken away to form his own gang. The One Free Download Gang quickly became one of the most powerful gangs in Jamaica.
The One Free Download Gang was known for its violence and brutality. The gang was responsible for a number of high-profile murders, including the murder of a Jamaican police commissioner. In 1995, Hope was arrested and charged with murder. He was convicted and sentenced to death.
The End of the Babylonian Wars
The Jamaican government took a number of steps to crack down on gangs in the 1990s. The government increased the number of police officers and passed new laws that made it easier to prosecute gang members. The government also implemented a number of social programs aimed at providing jobs and education to young people who were at risk of joining gangs.
These measures helped to reduce the violence associated with gangs in Jamaica. The Babylonian Wars ended in the late 1990s. However, gangs continue to operate in Jamaica today.
Gangs of Jamaica is a fascinating and important book that provides a comprehensive account of the Babylonian Wars. Robinson's writing is clear and concise, and he does an excellent job of explaining the complex history of gangs in Jamaica. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of organized crime in the Caribbean.
