Early life and education

Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924, to Prescott Bush, a wealthy investment banker, and Dorothy Walker Bush. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and Yale University, where he studied economics. After graduating from Yale in 1948, Bush worked in the oil industry in Texas.

Military service

In 1942, Bush enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a pilot in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He flew 58 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

Political career

After the war, Bush returned to Texas and resumed his work in the oil industry. He entered politics in 1964, when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He served in the House for six years and was then appointed by President Richard Nixon to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. In 1976, Bush was elected director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

In 1980, Bush was elected vice president of the United States under Ronald Reagan. He served as vice president for two terms and was instrumental in the Reagan administration's policies, including the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) and the invasion of Grenada.

Presidency

In 1988, Bush was elected president of the United States. He served as president for one term and oversaw the end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany. He also signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Bush lost his bid for re-election in 1992 to Bill Clinton. After leaving office, Bush retired to Texas, where he wrote his memoirs and founded the Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University.
