The Early Years

Hiawatha was born into the Onondaga tribe around 1570. His father was a chief, and Hiawatha was raised to be a warrior. However, Hiawatha was a peaceful man by nature, and he soon became known for his wisdom and his ability to resolve conflicts.

In his early twenties, Hiawatha traveled to the Mohawk tribe to seek a cure for his sick daughter. While he was there, he met a wise old man named Dekanawida. Dekanawida taught Hiawatha about the Great Law of Peace, and Hiawatha was inspired to spread this message of peace to all of the Iroquois tribes.

The Great Law of Peace

The Great Law of Peace is a complex system of laws and principles that governs the Iroquois Confederacy. It was developed over many years by Hiawatha and Dekanawida, and it is still followed by the Iroquois people today.

The Great Law of Peace is based on the principles of peace, harmony, and unity. It establishes a system of government that is based on consensus, and it provides for the fair and just resolution of disputes. The Great Law of Peace has been praised by scholars and historians as one of the most advanced systems of government ever developed.

The Iroquois Confederacy

The Iroquois Confederacy was a powerful alliance of five Iroquois tribes: the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. The Confederacy was formed in the late 16th century, and it lasted for over two centuries.

The Iroquois Confederacy was a major force in the history of North America. It controlled a vast territory that stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, and it played a key role in the fur trade. The Confederacy also resisted European colonization, and it was not until the late 18th century that the Iroquois were finally defeated by the United States.

Hiawatha's Legacy

Hiawatha is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the Iroquois people. He is credited with bringing peace to the warring tribes of the Iroquois and establishing the Great Law of Peace. Hiawatha's legacy continues to inspire the Iroquois people today, and he is a symbol of peace and unity.
