Madam C.J. Walker was an extraordinary woman who overcame adversity to become a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. Born into slavery in 1867, she went on to build a multi-million dollar business empire and become one of the wealthiest African American women of her time. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, determination, and the ability to make a difference in the world.

Early Life and Family

Sarah Breedlove was born into slavery in Delta, Louisiana, on December 23, 1867. Her parents, Owen and Minerva Breedlove, were both slaves. Sarah's father died when she was just two years old, and her mother died when she was seven. Sarah and her siblings were then raised by their grandmother, who taught them the importance of hard work and self-reliance.

In 1882, at the age of 14, Sarah married Moses McWilliams. The couple had one child, a daughter named Lelia. However, Moses died just two years later, and Sarah was left a widow with a young child to support.

The Hair Care Business

In 1888, Sarah moved to St. Louis, Missouri, to live with her brothers. It was there that she met Annie Malone, a successful African American businesswoman who owned a hair care company. Malone taught Sarah how to make and sell hair care products.

In 1905, Sarah started her own hair care company, the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. The company's products were a huge success, and Sarah quickly became a wealthy woman. She used her wealth to help others, founding schools and orphanages and supporting a variety of charitable causes.

Philanthropy and Social Activism

Madam Walker was a generous philanthropist who donated millions of dollars to various causes. She founded the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) in 1896 and served as its president for 20 years
