Controversy and Imprisonment:

Stead's bold tactics and sensationalist style drew both admiration and criticism. In 1889, he was charged with kidnapping Eliza Armstrong, a 13-year-old girl, for the purpose of exposing the loopholes in Britain's child protection laws. Despite his intentions, Stead's actions violated the law, and he was sentenced to six months in prison.

Stead played a pivotal role in the investigation, publishing theories and speculating about the identity of the infamous "Jack the Ripper."
