Neal's breakthrough came in 1949 when she starred in the Broadway production of "The Hasty Heart." Her performance earned her critical acclaim and led to her being cast in her first major film role in "The Fountainhead" (1949).
Over the next decade, Neal starred in a string of successful films, including "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951),"Hud" (1963),and "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961). She received an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in "Hud" and became one of the most popular and respected actresses of her time.
Neal's personal life was as dramatic as her professional life. She married writer Roald Dahl in 1953, and they had five children together. However, their marriage was strained by Dahl's infidelities and Neal's own struggles with alcoholism.
In 1965, Neal suffered a series of debilitating strokes that left her paralyzed on one side of her body. The strokes threatened to end her career and her life, but Neal refused to give up. She underwent intensive therapy and eventually regained much of her mobility and speech.
Neal's determination and resilience inspired others, and she became an advocate for stroke survivors and people with disabilities. She returned to acting in the 1970s and continued to work until her death in 2010.
