General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck was a Prussian officer who led a guerrilla campaign against the Allied forces in German East Africa during World War I. He was an exceptional commander who used unconventional tactics to outmaneuver and outfight his adversaries.

Lettow-Vorbeck was born in 1870 in Saarlouis, Germany. He joined the Prussian army in 1890 and served in various campaigns in Africa, including the Herero War in South West Africa and the Boxer Rebellion in China.

In 1914, when World War I broke out, Lettow-Vorbeck was in command of the German forces in German East Africa. He had a small force of around 12,000 men, but he was determined to defend the colony against the Allied forces.

The Allies had a much larger force, but Lettow-Vorbeck used his knowledge of the terrain and his guerrilla tactics to outmaneuver and outfight them. He avoided direct confrontations and instead relied on ambushes, raids, and sabotage.
