Born in Patiala, Punjab, on January 13, 1949, Rakesh Sharma was destined for greatness from a young age. Excelling in both academics and sports, he joined the Indian Air Force in 1970, where his exceptional flying skills quickly earned him recognition. When the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) announced its ambitious plans to send an Indian astronaut into space, Sharma eagerly applied and underwent rigorous training.

The selection process was grueling, involving comprehensive medical tests, psychological evaluations, and extensive simulations. Sharma emerged as one of the top candidates, and on September 2, 1982, he was officially selected to join the Soyuz T-11 mission. Accompanied by Soviet cosmonauts Yuri Malyshev and Gennady Strekalov, Sharma blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, bound for the Salyut 7 space station.

For the next eight days, Sharma and his crew conducted a series of experiments and observations, making valuable contributions to scientific research. Sharma became the first Indian to walk in space, spending over two hours outside the Salyut 7 station. During his historic spacewalk, he famously uttered the iconic words, "Saare jahan se accha," a line from a patriotic Indian poem, expressing his immense love for his homeland.

Sharma's mission not only showcased India's growing capabilities in space exploration but also ignited the dreams and aspirations of countless young Indians. His journey became a symbol of national pride and inspired a generation to pursue their own ambitions. Upon his return to Earth, Sharma was greeted as a hero, receiving numerous awards and accolades.
