Banks also played a key role in the discovery of Australia. He was the first European to set foot on the continent at Botany Bay, which he named after the abundance of plants he found there.
Kew Gardens
After his return from the Pacific, Banks became the director of Kew Gardens. Under his leadership, Kew Gardens became one of the world's leading botanical gardens.
