Early life and education

Joseph Banks was born in London in 1743. His father was a wealthy landowner and his mother was the daughter of the Duke of Beaufort. Banks was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. Voyages with Captain Cook

In 1768, Banks joined Captain Cook's first voyage to the Pacific. He was responsible for collecting and documenting the plants and animals that the expedition encountered.
