The Great Hunger

The Great Hunger, also known as the Irish Potato Famine, was a period of mass starvation and emigration in Ireland from 1845 to 1852. The famine was caused by a number of factors, including a potato blight, overpopulation, and British economic policies.

During the famine, over one million people died, and over two million emigrated to other countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Famine Ship Diary provides a firsthand account of the harrowing journey that many of these immigrants endured.

The Voyage of the Neptune

The Neptune was a British ship that carried over 800 Irish immigrants from Liverpool to Quebec City in 1847. The voyage was a nightmare. The ship was overcrowded and unsanitary, and the passengers were forced to live in squalid conditions.

During the voyage, over 200 passengers died of disease or starvation. The survivors were finally landed in Quebec City, but many of them were sick and weak. They faced a long and difficult journey to their new homes in Canada.

Robert Whyte's Diary

Robert Whyte was a young Irish immigrant who traveled on the Neptune. He kept a diary of his experiences during the voyage. Whyte's diary is a powerful and moving account of the horrors of the Famine. It is also a testament to the resilience and courage of the Irish people.

The Legacy of the Famine

The Great Hunger had a profound impact on Ireland. It led to a decline in the Irish population, a rise in emigration, and a strengthening of Irish nationalism. The famine also had a lasting impact on the Irish people's relationship with Britain.
