Possessive Nouns ENGLISH GRAMMAR : NOUN: TYPES RULES CONVERSION POSSESSIVE CASE OF NOUN SOME IMPORTANT NOUN WORDS (ENGLISH GRAMMAR FORM ZERO TO HERO 1)

In English grammar, the possessive case is used to show ownership or possession of a noun. It is formed by adding an apostrophe (') followed by an 's' to the end of the noun. For example, the possessive form of the noun "dog" is "dog's."

There are two main types of possessive nouns: singular and plural. Singular possessive nouns are used to show ownership by a single person or thing. Plural possessive nouns are used to show ownership by two or more people or things.

Types of Possessive Nouns

Singular Possessive Nouns

Singular possessive nouns are formed by adding an apostrophe (') followed by an 's' to the end of a singular noun. For example:

  • The boy's book
  • The girl's car
  • The dog's bone

Plural Possessive Nouns

Plural possessive nouns are formed by adding an apostrophe (') to the end of a plural noun. For example:

  • The boys' books
  • The girls' cars
  • The dogs' bones

Rules for Using Possessive Nouns

There are a few rules that you should follow when using possessive nouns:

  1. The apostrophe always comes before the 's.' For example: "The boy's book" not "The boy's book."
  2. For singular nouns, the apostrophe comes after the last letter of the word. For example: "The girl's car" not "The girl' car."
  3. For plural nouns that end in 's,' the apostrophe comes before the last 's.' For example: "The boys' books" not "The boys's books."
  4. Possessive nouns can be used with any type of noun. For example: "The teacher's desk" or "The company's headquarters."
  5. Possessive nouns can be used with compound nouns. For example: "The father-in-law's house" or "The mother-in-law's car."

Conversion of Possessive Nouns to Possessive Pronouns

Possessive nouns can be converted to possessive pronouns by using the following table:

| Possessive Noun | Possessive Pronoun | |---|---| | my | mine | | your | yours | | his | his | | her | hers | | its | its | | our | ours | | their | theirs |

For example, the possessive noun "the boy's book" can be converted to the possessive pronoun "his book."

The possessive case of nouns is a vital part of English grammar. By understanding the different types of possessive nouns and the rules for using them, you can use them correctly in your writing and speaking.
